At Badami we went to some old temples in caves. The first cave was a temple to Shiva, the next cave had a small carving of Ganesh and a bigger carving of a person with other people behind. But the statue was mostly cracked off. The third cave was a temple for Vishnu and had dwarves all over the base of it. (because Vishnu has a dwarf form). On the wall inside the cave there was a carving of Vishnu in his boar form. On the other wall there was a carving of Vishnu with a bow, arrow, sword, shield, and disk. In the picture he had 6 arms. There was also a Jain temple and another Vishnu temple. On November 12th we went to Hampi. It took about 6 hours to get there from Bangalore. We went to a small Hanuman temple when we got there. Then we walked a little farther and saw a Vishnu temple but we did not go down the hill to it. After that we went and got tea at a place looking over the river. There were lots of mosquitoes. Then we wandered around town for a little bit. We saw more haoles that day than the rest of our time in India! When it was getting dark we went to some other old temples. Then we went home. The next day we went walking early in the morning. We walked along the river to see if we could see any birds. We saw some birds but farther up the river we saw some old temples that we wanted to explore. We walked over there and there were three old buildings. Two of them were temples, the other we thought was a place for pilgrims to sleep in. After we got back to our hotel we got taken around in an auto to lots of different temples. One of the temples was a temple to Shiva that had been flooded with water. There was so much water you couldn't get through the front door but there was a path around the back on the temple and at the back of the temple we found a hole in the wall. We climbed through the hole and got in the temple. But there was only a small bit of dry floor and the rest was flooded with water also. After that we went to some more temples. And then we went in a coracle across the river to get to a Hanuman temple. To get to the Hanuman temple there were 500 steps. The Hanuman temple had a very nice view of the river and all of the land near the hill. After we got home from the Hanuman temple we ate at a fancier restaurant called The Mango Tree. At Mango Tree they were lighting rockets and firecrackers and other fireworks that would be illegal in the US. On Monday 29 October we went to Prabanjana's (one of my class mates) birthday party.
The first thing we did was to go play cricket. My team tied with the other team because we had to come back to the house and couldn't finish the game. When we got to the house we got to play Wii. Most of us played baseball. Those who didn't play baseball on the Wii played tennis. After Wii we ate CAKE!!! It was chocolate with whipped cream. YUMMY!!!! We had lunch. Lunch was bisibele bath (not bath like you clean yourself). Bisibele bath is made from lentils, rice, tomato, coconut, and onion. It is soupy because most of the lentils were ground and mixed with water. Then we opened presents. I got Prabajana a leather cricket ball adn a Horrible Histories book. Then we played a little more and went home on a bus. These pictures are Dasara. We went to Mysore to see the big Dasara parade. In the parade there were lots of different floats, animals and people doing acts. First people came with really tall flags and flag poles. The flag poles were made of bronze. Two people were holding the poles with ropes and one person was holding the pole. Then came a marching band, swordsmen (dressed up traditionally), then 7 (I think) elephants. A little after the elephants passed, a float came with drummers following it. About 40 floats passed. Every one separated by an average of about 3 groups of people drumming, dancing, doing acrobatics or acting. During the parade a reporter for Newz 24 interviewed the adults. He asked them all sorts of questions they had a hard time answering. At the end of the parade a group of horsemen came around. They all had spears, except their leader who had a saber. I think there was two groups of horsemen like the one I described. Then after the two groups of horsemen a big elephant came carrying a solid gold litter with a solid gold statue inside (the newspaper said it weighed 750 kg). One of the men leading the elephant lifted us over the fence to touch the elephant's tusk. Last week we went to a place in the rainforest called Rainforest Retreat which is a place where you can rent a cottage and stay the night. The forest was very much like the forest in Hawaii. There was a bunch of plants that looked like some plants in Hawaii. It was nice to hear frogs at night instead of cars. The only problem was THE LEECHES! warning: the next part of this blog could be scary for some people do not read more be warned
we went to Halebid and Belur on Monday there were lots of carvings on the walls.you can see them above .we ate a late lunch at belur and left for home it took a really long time to get home. when we finally got there it was 9:30 pm.every one was sleepy from walking almost all day and went to sleep.

today we went home to Bangalore. But there were protesters blocking the way with trucks. We managed to get past a crack in the trucks after waiting for about 20 minutes. The reason that we got past the trucks is that there were people getting through a crack so the protesters drove forward to block that crack. then we drove through a hole it made behind the truck with a few other cars. We drove about 1-3 minutes when we got to a big group of people with loudspeakers shouting. We stopped there for another 20 minutes. Then the crowd of protesters yelling in Kannada started walking. After going for a little bit we got stopped AGAIN!!! This time we got stopped by a police man how said that unless we were part of the protest we couldn't go any further. Then he had us drive to block a side street people were going through. A person came and told us to just go. We drove through the small village the side road led to and soon came back on the main road in front of the protest. There were no more stops beside lunch after that. For lunch we got tandoori chicken, biriani, ghee rice, and fish (which I didn't eat). While we were eating some guys came and sat at the table behind us. A little later I heard a blousha! sound from behind me. When I looked back one of the guys was puking. Then after that a different guy puked 2 more times and went out of the restaurant. Luckily none of the other guys puked. After lunch we got taken to a waterfall where people were swimming. We all went on a ride close to the falls except for my dad. he went swimming right where the water was pouring into the lake. I'll put pictures of that later. MA LAY not male October 1:
Today we went to Male Mahadeshwaram Temple. They put bindis on us when we went inside there was a room that the archway into was plated in silver. After we came out of the temple, "The Golden Temple" a littler with a gold top and a god's statue inside came out and drove around the temple. People started lighting at trail of incenses in the wake of the cart holding "the golden temple." We also saw a village that was half soliga and half lingayat two tribes that are native to India. They have cool mud huts. September 30:
today we actually went to the Biligiri Ranga Swami Temple. There was a kid who showed us the temple. I can't remember his name. In the temple there was 2 or 3 statues of him and also other statues of a elephant and a god. There were also two pairs of shoes that belonged to Ranga Swami (the god the temple is to) one of the pairs of shoes was new and one was pair was old. They were both fancy and had shiny paper and gold paint. The older pair were worn and did not look as fancy but you could tell they used to be fancy. The shoes were about 2 feet long. On our way to the temple there was a stone carving of a god. There was a monkey hanging around the statue that people first gave offering to the statue then gave that same offering to the monkey (the offering was some bananas). |
