on the 30 of may we went with my friend prabhanjanas aunts and uncles and grandparents to his Bhramopadesham. which is a ceremony where traditionally he would leave to be an apprentice and not see his parents for 20 years. now its all ceremonial and he stays living with his parents.there are photos of most of the ceremony.they wrapped him in a cloth with his hand on his head then tied the cloth on then they gave him his yajnopavita three strings that symbolize being a Brahmin and having a been born for the second time. after the ceremony we went to the beach when we got there there was one section that was really crowded we went to the right where nobody was swimming when we jumped in the water a guard whistled and told us we couldn't swim there because it had sharks!!!! of course there was no sharks in the water 5 metres away! then he told us that it dropped off suddenly we splashed a little in the shallows but got bored so we built a sand castle instead. On the 3rd of May we took two planes to get to Bagdogra then we drove to Darjeeling. On the 6th of May we drove from Darjeeling to Jorethang. From Jorethang we drove to Yuksom, the start of our trek. The first day we took a trail from the town to Sikkim's oldest Monastery. The monastery's name is Dubbdi. In the monastery there were lots of interesting wall paintings. The beams were carved and painted. The alter had sugar statues. The lama of Dubdi monastery is descended from the gods. There were statues of the gods that he is descended from. One had a human femur bone in one hand. The next day we started our 9-day trek. The first day wasn't too hard and I didn't get too tired unless going on long uphills. Even when I got tired I had plenty of time to rest if I went ahead of the others. The main problem is that my feet got sore after walking 2 hours. In all it took us 3 hours to get to the camp and it was about a 12-km trek until the campsite. So we walked about 4 km/hr. We got to camp at lunch. Lunch was saimin-like noodles, rice and potato curry. After lunch we rested and played cards and read until dinner. Dinner was chicken curry, green beans, cauliflower, soup, lentils and rice. On the trek we saw lots of scenery. We crossed two suspension bridges that bounced when you walked across them. I can't describe the trees and mountains in enough detail so instead, look at the photos I took. May 9th was almost the same as May 8th but it was shorter: 8 km instead of 12km. It also took 4 hours though because it was more uphill. In the first part, the only signs of civilization besides the track were footprints and . . . a potato and a cucumber!!! We crossed another suspension bridge over a river valley. May 10th: we walked 10km and it took 5 hrs 45 minutes, including lunch. Surprisingly it took almost the same time for all the days. Today we climbed up about 1,000m. We are now 4,000m above sea level - about 13,200 feet. The last bit of the trail was really steep. On the trail we found granite so old I could crack it with my walkingstick. Earlier in the trek there were whole forests of rhododendron. Now we are so high only scrub grows. But there are lots of pretty birds. We've seen a Himalayan crow, it's twice the size of a normal crow. A collared grosbeak, a white-browed rose finch, and a yellow-billed blue mockingbird. In the sheltered spots we saw patches of snow. May 11: Today we had a rest day at Dzongri. At 5 in the morning we walked to the top of a hill. At the top was a viewpoint. It was really cold and my feet and nose hurt. When we got to the top there was a shrine with lots of prayer flags. There were 7 mountains you could see. From the right to left there was Pandim, Konchengdzonga, South Kabur, Black Kabur, North Kabur, and Koktang. Later in the day we played cricket with a hand-carved bat and a ball made from a burlap bag tied into a ball. May 12: Today we walked 8.5 km and it took 4.5 hours. It was mostly downhill. We went from Dzongri to Tashing. Tashing is in a valley in between two big mountains. May 13 & 14: Today we went 4km to Lamune from Tashing. About an hour after we got there it started to hail. After another couple of hours the hail turned to snow. We were worried the snow would keep going and we would not get to go all the way to Goche-la. Luckily it stopped snowing before 3:30am (which is when we started our trek to Goche-la). We walked up with flashlights but the sun rose enough to see at about 5:00. At first it was nice walking through the snow but my feet got really cold after about 1 hour 45 minutes. When we got to the first stop my feet were so cold they burned. Kekai's feet were also so cold and he had a headache. So me, him, and my mom went back and my dad went to the second viewpoint. The first viewpoint was 4,600m high! It was 3km to the first part but it was all uphill and in the snow so our feet sunk in. It took us 3 hours. 1 km/hour: half the speed we usually go. After that we hiked down from Lamune to Kokchurang. Kokchurang is in a valley. We hiked all the way back on the same trail through the old campsites we'd already been so I won't talk about it. We finished our trek and went back to Darjeeling for a day. Then we went to Phedikhola where my mom looked at ATREE's projects. We went and saw a bunch of the villagers gardens and stuff. One person had a roomful of mushrooms. Every villager had at least one beehive. We also went on a hike up to a smaller village. May 27: Today we are back in boring and busy Bangalore. We went to see the new movie, Epic. Bangalore is very hot, especially after being in the mountains. We are now living in our friend, Nitin's apartment in Bangalore. There's really nothing to do but play indoor games or go shopping or read a book. I'm really bored here!! Two of the drinks we've discovered are Thumbs Up and lassi. Lassi is a curd drink(it sounds disgusting but is actually good.)You can get sweet, salt, plain, mango, lemon, and some other flavours including chocolate sometimes. My favourite flavors are lemon and sweet. The most common flavours are plain ,salt and sweet.
Thumbs Up is kid of like Indian coke. but it dosen't quite have the same taste. i like it better than coke.it was bought by coke. Another Indian soda is Limca, a lime flavoured drink like Sprite but more limey. Lime soda is another of our favourite drinks .It is soda water mixed with lime juice.it comes in sweet ,salt and plain. You can also get it with sweet and salt.the sweet is made by melting sugar into a syrup on the stove. there are many more Indian drinks not listed on this page. We went from Alleppey to Kollam in a boat. It took 8 hours to get to Kollam. For most of the ride I read a book on my Kindle. When the batteries died I looked out the window. In one part of the river I saw jelly fish. They were white with black dots on their heads. They had thick tentacles. We saw lots of birds also! in Rajasthan we went on a camel trek with my gramparents at the end of the trek we stopped at a camp and had dinner after dinner me and kekai played tag in the dark. in Rajasthan ,Delhi and Gujarat there were may camels here are some p.s there are no pictures from Delhi but there were camels there to Mostly from my journal On December 22 we left for Gujarat on a plane at 9:30pm. We got to Gujarat at midnight. In Gujarat we arrived at Ahmedabad and spent the night there. In the morning we got room service! We left from Ahmedabad and went to Dhagendrha. We stayed at a house there that gave tours of the desert in jeeps. We checked into our hotel and then went to explore the town. In the town we met a group of kids that wanted to have their pictures taken. We took their picture. Then we kept walking. Then we met some men that owned a grain shop. They gave us some tea. One of them played a flute for us. My dad tried but he couldn't play the flute. We then got invited to come to two temples. One was a Shiva temple and one was a Krishna temple. They both had smaller statues of Hanuman. After walking farther we met a man who brought us to a small Muslim shrine in the courtyard of a school. Two of teh man's friends came and said that he was a Haji (a person who made a pilgrimage to Mecca). Then one of his friends bought us all a Thumbs Up (an Indian soda like Coke). We passed a store where they were dying and selling kite string. The owners of the shop let us take pictures of them dyeing the string. When we left they gave us 5 small kites and 2 spools of string. We also bought bigger kites from a different store. The next day we went on a jeep drive in the desert. We woke up at 6:00 in the morning, got ready, and ate breakfast. WE left in the jeep at 7:30. It was cold driving in the open air jeep. On the road we saw 2 dead dogs. In the desert we saw wild asses, cranes, blue bull flamingos! Yeah, I must be hallucinating, you think. I also saw water! and we saw my brother, who is in the same category. We saw them driving around in the jeep. We first saw the asses. Not that kind. They are like donkeys. They were brown with a white belly. Then we saw a bluebull. They looked like cows but smaller and a little different. They were bluish-grey-black or beige or blue-brown. Then we saw flamingos. They looked like the ones at the zoo you've all seen. They were not as pink though. They were all light pink or white. The desert: every year the desert floods in the monsoon (rainy season). The desert is so close to the sea there is salty ground water so that water also comes up in the rainy season. So in the monsoon, the whole desert floods with brackish water. The water is 1-2.5 feet deep. In this time of year prawns come in from the sea (that is what the flamingos eat). Every year fishermen also fish the prawns. There is some water left every year. The flamingos live in until more water comes again. The same day we also switched the place we were staying. We moved from a town to khoombas right across the street from teh desert. On the way we saw the salt storage. They had piles taller than me of salt. Then we went to the place they were producing salt. They had wells that they pumped water from into pans. In the pans they let the water evaporate so its just salt then they sent the salt on trucks to the huge piles of salt. In the morning we went bird watching. We didn't get any good pictures but we saw many birds. On Christmas when we were driving to Bhuj (which is a place named after a knife-axe) our tire completely busted. And our driver started yelling all kinds of Gujarati swear words. It was a very bad blow out. We drove all day long. We then checked into a hotel right across from Aina Mahal, a stone fort. My brother, Mom, and Dad left to explore the town a little but I stayed behind in the room. In Bhuj we drove 90 km to the White Desert. It was all mud, salt, and water. We saw two guys that trekked out into the desert and got stuck in the mud. There were camel rides but we didn't get to go on one. It was too bad but I knew we would get to go on one in Rajasthan. On our way back a bunch of teenagers swarmed us to take pictures and were pulling me like a tug-of-war rope. We finally escaped but the ground around us was liquified. Later, when we went to Dholavira, we saw a much better salt desert with no crowds or mud. Instead of looking like mud and salt soup, the ground looked like dry cornflakes (frosted flakes, of course!). We found a dead flamingo with so much salt on it it wasn't rotten. It was like a salt-mummy. We tried to take its beak (well, my Dad tried to take its beak) but broke it. I found a bone that I got out of the salt intact. In Bhuj we also went to a museum (Aina Mahal, which means Mirror Palace in Hindi). The palace was turned into a museum. Most of the walls had mirrors on them. In the museum we saw weapons and armour. In the same room as the armour there was a huge collection of herbs and leaves stuck on the wall. In one corridor the whole wall was covered in green and purple glass panels. In the museum there were a bunch of instruments, the king liked music adn hired musicians to play for him. We also saw the armoury of the king. It had a suit of chain mail, swords, shields, spears, muskets, knives, bows, and a thing that I don't know its name with two blades. The next day we went to Kala Dunga, a big hill. From the top we could see all the way to Dholavira with binoculars. Then we went to the White Desert that I talked about above. The whole thing was covered with salt. We wanted to get a camel ride but didn't have the time. Under the salt was mud so you had to watch your step. We got swarmed by teenager students. They kept grabbing up to take pictures adn playing tug'o'war with us to get our pictures. They took pictures with us for at least half an hour. The solid ground near us got trampled adn mushy. We were almost trapped. IT WAS HORRID! We left Bhuj at 6:30am to get to Dholavira. Dholavira is the oldest city in the world! The buildings there outdate the pyramids and are about the same age as Stonehenge. The city had a castle, a bailey, multiple water tanks, an upper town, a middle town, a lower town and even a defensive wall. I have a picture of a map that I'll show below. After Dholavira we went to Ahmedabad. On the way to Dholavira we saw the white desert I talked about. It was just like the other one except for no mud, crowds, footprints, or other craziness. It was 10 times better than the other one. 11 December At 12:55 we left on the train to Delhi from Yeswanthpur Station. After the train started moving I had lunch. For lunch I had a sandwich and some yoghurt and a carrot. After lunch I played a game of Uno. I won the game. Then I played Life but we never finished the game. After playing Life I had a cup of tea while I read a book. Then me and Prabhanjana took pictures out the window. Then I tried to get Munju to stop singing a song. The song got stuck in my head. Now we're stopped at Hubli. P.S. I met a Tibetan lady. 12 December Today is our second day on the train. I felt a little sick and only had some carrots for lunch. I took some pictures on the train. I slept some of the day. At night I met the same Tibetan lady and learned that her name was Neema. She told us about Tibet. 13 December 8 more days Today is the last day on the train. For breakfast we had disgusting veg burgers. The bad part wasn't that the burgers were veg but that there was nothing on them but mayo, lettuce (the lettuce was minced and not nice) and ketchup (the ketchup came in a little pack). At 9:00 we reached Delhi. In the station we saw tanks being moved by trains. Once we got out of the train station we boarded a bus which took us to our lodgings. The girls' hostel and boys' hostel were separate buildings (they weren't just next door separate buildings they were far away). After settling in our hostels we went to the Delhi Haat. At the Delhi Haat I bought a model chicken for my Tutu. 14 December 7 more days Today we went to India Gate, an art exhibition, and Parliament. For breakfast I had two pieces of toast, one hard boiled egg, a glass of hot milk and two potato things. After picking up the girls in a bus we went to India Gate. At India Gate there was a huge arch (the gate) on the arch it had a list of names of soldiers that died. All around the gate there was a chain. Under the arch of the gate there were three flags and some braziers. There were 5 guards inside the chain. On the chain there was a police truck with two guards in fancy hats. Then we visited Parliament. To get in we had to get patted down like 4 times. In Parliament it was kind of boring. We just watched people talk. There was a lady who every time we leaned forward to see got mad. I almost fell asleep more than once. We also went to a museum that showed how the Indian Parliament was formed. The last thing we did today was to see an art exhibition. The main artist was Nandalal base. 15 December 6 more days Today we went to Indira Gandhi's house/museum, Safdar Jung's tomb, National Museum, and Doll's Museum. For lunch we went to a place in town. Everyone got thalis because that's all they had. The thalis had rice, puri, dal, sambar, and other stuff + one cracker thing. The first place we went was Safdarjung's tomb. It is a muslim building so it had a big bulbous roof like the Taj Mahal. The next place we went to was the National Museum. At the National Museum there was lots of stone carvings. There were also coins and other artifacts. Me and Prabunjuna accidentally went in a staff-only place looking for the teacher. The place we went to after the national Museum was Indira Gandhi's house. There we learned how she got killed by two of her own security guards. We also saw where she died. She had a golden sword that Qatar gave her The last place we went was the Dolls' Museum. They had dolls from all over the world. My favorite dolls were made completely from leaves. 16 December 5 more days Today we went on a heritage walk to Humayun's tomb and an art museum. For lunch I had bread and dal at a place outside the zoological park. We first went on the heritage walk. On the heritage walk we saw lots of ruined or old buildings. On some of the buildings you could see how they built their domes (our guide (Sabina Auntie's brother) told us how and why the buildings were built). the domes were built by doubling the amount of sides of a room. So if a room had four sides then the layer above would have 8 sides. this was usually repeated 2 times. On the walk we also saw a tomb that got renovated and made into a house by some Brit. This same Brit built a pillar that his servants light every night like a light house. He also built ruins. Yea, crazy! Then we went to Humayun's tomb. The building was completely surrounded by a thin stream with ponds at the corners and sides. Teh inside of the tomb had some geometric patterns on the floor with stars, squares, and ocatagons. Outside the door of the tomb there were stone boxes to show where people were buried. There was one stone box on the inside, Humayun's. I bought a book at the gift shop. After we saw Humayun's tomb we went to an art gallery. My favorite painting was one of the Himalayas. At the gift shop I bought two mugs with paintings on them and one print. 17 December 4 more days Today we went rock climbing. For lunch I had butter chicken, peas and rice, naan, and chapati. The first thing we did was rappelling. First we climbed up a mountain on a steep trail. Then we got to a cliff. There was a rope tied to a big rock on the side of the cliff. The instructors told us how to go down and then one of them (instructors) went down. Surya was the first kid to go down. Prabanjana and me made jokes about falling off the cliff while about 10-12 people went, then I went. The instructor went over how to do it and I went down. The scariest part was right when I was about to go down but still not off the cliff. 2/3 of the way down there was an overhang and I had to just hang on the rope the rest of the way. After rappelling we went on an obstacle course. The first thing we did was a climbing wall. I got second highest of Makaras and Vrishabhas. Then we did a rope swing. It was pretty easy just hold on and jump let go. After that was upside down rope climbing. I did pretty well in that. Then we did the balance beam, tunnel, and rope bridge. We then climbed up and down a rope net, and crossed a hole on footholds hanging from the sky. 18 December 3 more days Today we went to the Taj Mahal and the person who built the Taj's Grandfather's tomb. For lunch I had rice, paneer, chapathi, and dal. First we went to the person who built the Taj's Grandfather's tomb. It was much smaller than the Taj but made out of marble also. The inside had much more design than the inside of the Taj. Next we went to the Taj Mahal. It at first looked smaller than the pictures and I made up a song: Kalani's song (c) copyright It's the Taj Mahal, It's very small, I'm very glum, It's the size of my thumb. But it looked normal later. I took lots of pictures with my class and on my own. It was nice. 19 December
2 more days Today we went to Red Fort, Qutab Minar, and Janpath. For lunch we went to Hadiram's on Chandini Chowk. At Haldiram's I had a plain dosa, sambar, lemonade, and a hot fudge sundae. First we went to Qutab Minar. Qutab Minar is a very tall tower. The top was struck by lightning 2 times. There was also a iron pillar that weighed 6,000kg. After Qutab Minar we went to Red Fort. It had huge walls made of red stone. Inside the walls was where the British set up barracks. The place the barracks were used to be gardens. Behind the British buildings there were several houses made of marble. All of them had an aqueduct running through them that brought water from the river to the baths where the water was heated. Last we went to Janpath, a big bazaar. I wandered around looking at things for awhile. When were were going to leave I bought a shirt with the Taj on it for my Kane. Tomorrow I'm going to Delhi. I'm leaving at 9:30am to get to the train station. then leaving in the train at 12 o'clock. I will be on the train for 3 days.
We will get to Delhi at 9:15 on December 13. In Delhi we will visit Delhi Haat, Parliament, India Gate, then the National Museum, Janpath. We will also visit Qutab Minar Heritage Walk, Humayun's Tomb, NGMA Rock Climbing. YEAH! ROCK CLIMBING! We will see Agra, Triveni, and Old Fort. We'll leave Delhi on the 20th and arrive in Bangalore 2 days later. Then one more day later we go to Gujarat then back to Delhi with my grandparents. |
