Election is over and so’s the hype. I’m the better for it, not reading so many political blogs and not getting as worked up. Now we’ll see what Obama really wants to do, or we’ll just see more institutional party politics… I won’t start.
I dDid another bike ride today, only about 120km but was nice to cruise around and explore. I’m feeling much more comfortable in the city in particular. Google Maps suggest routes, but they go right out the window pretty much as soon as I leave the apartment. I read a thing in the paper the other day that the Indian driver’s license test is supposed to take 12 minutes to complete, in theory leaving each inspector time for about 30 tests per day. Thing is that most inspectors are issuing upwards to 5,000 per day… go figure. That's not a typo, five THOUSAND (The HIndu, Nov. 20, 2012).
Still trying to find a good Indian beer. All of them, okay there’s really only one Indian beer (Kingfisher) but Carlsberg, Budweiser, Fosters, and a few others bottle here, but they all contain “ethyl alcohol as part of the brewing process”. This is something I can’t fathom and am sure is not part of the brewing process, at least as I’m familiar with it. Makes them all taste sort of bitter (not in a hopy way) and gives a horrible headache if more than a few are consumed in an evening.
We have been paying more attention to birds in the last few weeks. Starting to “checklist” them in our book. Some very beautiful species to be seen here. A favorite common one of mine is the Brahminy Kite, a large raptor that looks like a bald eagle. Also many cool water-birds like egrets and cranes, often seen in the rice fields. Also, though wuite some time ago now we saw some gorgeous sunbirds and beeeaters in the Western Ghat forests.
So, that’s all of the top of my head for now. Next few weeks look relatively routine, perhaps I’ll get to some of that Hawaii writing I’ve been keeping on the top of my pile… Also, tryingt o work on a presentation for Poorna school about the Maya and Aztec and also a talk to be delivered to the National Institute of Advanced Studies in December. Cheers.
Oh, be sure to check out "latest Photos" from recent six-day road trip.
