The flight from Hilo to Bangalore went surprisingly smoothly aside from the loss of one of our best India books on the first leg of the flight. Although the flight time was "only" 37 hours (airport to airport) it spanned three nights and Kekai was determined to stay up for the whole time so that he could say he'd been up for 3 nights. He did a distressingly good job of it until the 4-hour layover in Frankfurt where immediately upon finishing his croissant he was out cold. I carried him around the airport, dropping him on benches for the remaining 2 hours and only barely managed to wake him up enough to get him on the plane!
Both kids were thrilled with the 2 Luftansa legs of the flight where economy class has about the same perks as first class on a U.S. carrier. We had personal video screens loaded with a wide range of films (but see Kekai's blog), metal and ceramic dishes, and hot towels after takeoff and before landing. Kalani has decided that he wants to go out of his way in booking flights to make sure he gets on Luftansa flights from now on.
Fulbright had arranged for a driver for us at the airport and once we'd passed through immigration everything was quite easy. We got to Nitin & Muthu's house around 3am, collapsed into bed, and were out for the rest of the night.
